/ Shopify SEO expert for migrations, theme switches and drops
A Shopify SEO expert for migrations and traffic drops.
Bring in a Shopify SEO expert when something specific has gone wrong, or is about to: a move from WooCommerce or Magento, a theme switch, a Shopify Markets rollout or a sudden slump in Search Console. A senior specialist finds the cause, fixes it or briefs your developer, within a fixed scope.
Send the date it started and what changed around then. That narrows it down quickly.

Illustrative growth curve. The totals are real, rounded down, across four stores using our SEO playbook.
Diagnosis before any fix/ Sound familiar?
Something broke. You need to know what.
Most stores that call a specialist aren't looking for a retainer. They have one problem, a date when it started and a sales figure that keeps falling.
Traffic fell after the move to Shopify
Your old WooCommerce URLs lived under /product/ and /product-category/. Half the redirects were never set up, and your best-linked pages now return a 404.
The new theme looks better and ranks worse
Headings changed, collection descriptions moved below the fold, breadcrumbs and product schema disappeared. Nobody compared the two themes before pressing publish.
The wrong country shows up in Google
UK shoppers land on euro prices, the German subfolder isn't indexed, and hreflang points at URLs Google has never crawled because a geo-redirect turns Googlebot away.
Search Console is a wall of warnings
'Crawled, currently not indexed' and 'Duplicate without user-selected canonical' climb every week, across thousands of variant, tag and vendor URLs.
These problems have causes you can find. Finding them fast is the job of a specialist.
/ What's included
Problems a Shopify SEO expert gets called in for.
Five kinds of problem make up most of our expert work. Each one gets diagnosed before anything is changed, then fixed directly or briefed to your developer.
Migrations to Shopify
A Shopify SEO expert plans the move from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform before launch day. Every old URL gets mapped to its closest new page, and redirects are tested in bulk, not spot-checked by hand.
Why it matters: redirects on Shopify only fire when nothing exists at the old path, so mapping mistakes are easy to miss and costly.
- Old URLs pulled from sitemaps, backlinks and analytics
- Magento .html and WooCommerce /product/ paths mapped one to one
- Redirects imported by CSV and tested in bulk
- Blog posts moved to /blogs/ without losing links
- Titles, copy and schema carried over, not rewritten blind
- Post-launch checks in Search Console for 90 days
Theme switches
Moving to a new theme or an Online Store 2.0 rebuild changes far more than design. We crawl the old and new theme side by side on a preview and fix the SEO gaps before your team publishes.
Why it matters: most rankings lost in a theme switch come from small template differences nobody checked.
- Old and new themes crawled and compared on preview
- H1s, titles and collection copy placement matched
- Breadcrumbs, product schema and review markup restored
- Internal links and pagination checked in the new sections
- Customisations from the old theme carried across
- Monitoring for two to four weeks after publishing
Markets & hreflang
Shopify Markets creates subfolders, domains and hreflang automatically, which is exactly why problems hide there. We check what Google actually indexes for each market, and fix translations, redirects and alternate links.
Why it matters: one wrong geo-redirect can keep a whole country invisible in search while sales there look merely slow.
- Hreflang and x-default checked on live, indexable URLs
- Automatic redirects replaced with a country selector
- Translate & Adapt gaps found on key collections
- Currency and price in product schema per market
- Expansion stores and domains reviewed for Shopify Plus
- Wider fixes by our international SEO consultant
App bloat & speed
When Core Web Vitals fail on a Shopify store, apps are the usual suspect. We trace each script back to its app, find the leftovers from apps you removed long ago, and decide with you what stays.
Why it matters: a slow product page loses shoppers on mobile before Google even weighs the ranking signal.
- Every third-party script traced to an installed or removed app
- Leftover snippets and ScriptTags removed from the theme
- App embeds limited to the templates that need them
- Largest image and font loading fixed for LCP
- Interaction delays from heavy widgets reduced for INP
- Before and after field data from real Chrome users
Indexing problems
Search Console warnings on Shopify usually trace back to a handful of patterns: variant URLs, tag pages, vendor and type collections, sold-out products. We find which pattern is growing and fix it at template level.
Why it matters: thousands of junk URLs in the crawl queue slow down how fast Google finds your new collections and products.
- Page indexing report broken down by URL pattern
- Tag, vendor and type pages kept out where they add nothing
- seo.hidden metafield used to drop pages from sitemaps
- Sold-out and discontinued products handled without soft 404s
- Canonical and internal links aligned on variant URLs
- Crawl questions beyond Shopify go to our technical SEO consultant
/ How it works
How an expert engagement runs.
Short, tightly scoped work with a clear end point. This is how a typical engagement runs, from the first message to the handover.
What broke, and when
You tell us the symptoms, the dates and recent changes: theme updates, app installs, migrations, Markets settings.
You get: a shortlist of likely causes and the access we need.
Find the cause
We compare Search Console data with your change history, crawl the store and read the affected templates.
You get: a written diagnosis and a fixed-scope plan.
Fix or brief
We apply the fixes on a copy of your theme ourselves, or write precise tickets and review your developer's work.
You get: fixes live, tested on preview before publishing.
Check and hand over
We watch indexing, rankings and organic orders recover, then document what changed and what to keep an eye on.
You get: a handover your team can rely on.

The same playbook, behind every fix.
Expert work draws on the same SEO playbook behind these totals: four ecommerce stores over 16 months, rounded down and shown in total for client privacy.
SEO, across four stores
16 monthsclicks from Google, without paying for a single one
One of these stores now makes 20 to 30 sales every week from search alone.
Our clients' data stays theirs, so we show rounded totals rather than their dashboards.

When an expert is the right call.
✓A great fit if you are
- Moving to Shopify soon from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform
- Lost organic traffic after a change such as a theme switch, app install or launch
- About to switch themes and want the SEO checked before you publish
- Rolling out Shopify Markets or untangling a setup that isn't ranking abroad
- Have a capable developer who needs a senior specialist to point them at the cause
✕Probably not a fit if you
- Want ongoing monthly SEO. Our Shopify SEO agency team runs that
- Need recovery promised by a date. We can find causes and fix them, not promise Google's timing
- Want to skip redirects to launch faster. That shortcut usually costs more traffic than it saves time
- Aren't on Shopify. Our ecommerce SEO consultant covers other platforms
/ Do this first
Six checks before you call a Shopify SEO expert.
You can often narrow down a Shopify SEO problem in an afternoon with free tools. These checks will either solve it or make any specialist's job much faster.
Line up the dates
In Search Console, compare the period before and after the drop. Then list what changed on those dates: theme publishes, app installs, migrations, Google updates. The match is often obvious.
Test your old URLs
After a migration, take a few dozen old URLs from your old sitemap or analytics and open them. Each should land on the matching new page with a single 301, not on the homepage or a 404.
Read one product page's source
Check the canonical points to the /products/ URL, there is one H1, and only one block of Product schema. Two review apps often add two.
Sort the Page indexing report
Open the examples under each reason and look for patterns: ?variant=, /collections/vendors, tag URLs. A growing pattern is a template problem, not a page problem.
Check hreflang on each market
View the source on one page per market. Every alternate link should return a 200, be indexable and point back. Then test whether a visitor from another country gets redirected.
Count the third-party scripts
In Chrome DevTools, filter the Network tab by third-party domains. Compare what loads with the apps you actually use today. Leftovers are common.

Who can fix this problem?
Several people could be asked to help when Shopify rankings break. Here's what each is realistically good at.
| Your theme developer | Shopify Support | Generalist SEO agency | Perfometrics | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnoses a traffic drop | Can check code, not search data | Platform questions, not rankings | Yes, often slowly and generically | ✓Search data and theme code together |
| Migration redirect mapping | Imports what they're given | Explains the redirect tool | Builds a sheet, rarely tests in bulk | ✓Mapped, imported and tested in bulk |
| Markets and hreflang | Sets up what's asked | Explains settings | Varies | ✓Checked against what Google indexes |
| How the work is scoped | Hourly | Free, within support limits | Usually a retainer | ✓Fixed scope, fixed quote |
| After the fix | Moves to the next ticket | Case closed | Monthly report | ✓Monitoring, then a written handover |
